The Response
\nPsalm 23

\n\n

Dominus regit me

\n\n

1 The Lord is my shepherd; *
\nI shall not be in want.

\n\n

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures *
\nand leads me beside still waters.

\n\n

3 He revives my soul *
\nand guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake.

\n\n

4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; *
\nfor you are with me;
\nyour rod and your staff, they comfort me.

\n\n

5 You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; *
\nyou have anointed my head with oil,
\nand my cup is running over.

\n\n

6 Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, *
\nand I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

\n\n

The Epistle
\nRevelation 7:9-17

\n\n

I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying,

\n\n

“Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

\n\n

And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing,

\n\n

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom

\n\n

and thanksgiving and honor

\n\n

and power and might

\n\n

be to our God forever and ever!
\nAmen.”

\n\n

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

\n\n

For this reason they are before the throne of God,
\nand worship him day and night within his temple,
\nand the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.

\n\n

They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;
\nthe sun will not strike them,
\nnor any scorching heat;

\n\n

for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd,
\nand he will guide them to springs of the water of life,

\n\n

and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Acts 5:27-32

\n\n

When the temple police had brought the apostles, they had them stand before the council. The high priest questioned them, saying, "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you are determined to bring this man's blood on us." But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than any human authority. The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior that he might give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him."

\n\n

John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

\n\n

To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

\n\n

Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

The Gospel
\nJohn 20:19-31

\n\n

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

\n\n

But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe."

\n\n

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."

\n\n

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

Deuteronomy 26:1-11

\n\n

When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, "Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us." When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make this response before the Lord your God: "A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me." You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. With what kind of body do they come?\" Fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And as for what you sow, you do not sow the body that is to be, but a bare seed, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body.\n\nSo it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. Genesis 45:3-11, 15

\n\n

Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?" But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence.

\n\n

Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come closer to me." And they came closer. He said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. I will provide for you there--since there are five more years of famine to come--so that you and your household, and all that you have, will not come to poverty.'"

\n\n

And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them; and after that his brothers talked with him.

Noli aemulari

\n\n

1 Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; *
\ndo not be jealous of those who do wrong.
\n2 For they shall soon wither like the grass, *
\nand like the green grass fade away.
\n3 Put your trust in the Lord and do good; *
\ndwell in the land and feed on its riches.
\n4 Take delight in the Lord, *
\nand he shall give you your heart's desire.
\n5 Commit your way to the Lord and put your trust in him, *
\nand he will bring it to pass.
\n6 He will make your righteousness as clear as the light *
\nand your just dealing as the noonday.
\n7 Be still before the Lord *
\nand wait patiently for him.
\n8 Do not fret yourself over the one who prospers, *
\nthe one who succeeds in evil schemes.
\n9 Refrain from anger, leave rage alone; *
\ndo not fret yourself; it leads only to evil.
\n10 For evildoers shall be cut off, *
\nbut those who wait upon the Lord shall possess the land.
\n11 In a little while the wicked shall be no more; *
\nyou shall search out their place, but they will not be there.
\n12 But the lowly shall possess the land; *
\nthey will delight in abundance of peace.
\n41 But the deliverance of the righteous comes from the Lord; *
\nhe is their stronghold in time of trouble.
\n42 The Lord will help them and rescue them; *
\nhe will rescue them from the wicked and deliver them,
\nbecause they seek refuge in him.

1 Corinthians 15:35-38,42-50

\n\n

Someone will ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?" Fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And as for what you sow, you do not sow the body that is to be, but a bare seed, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body.

\n\n

So it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body. Thus it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first, but the physical, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of heaven.

\n\n

What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
